Jeongseon is proud of its unspoiled and exquisite natural environment, which makes it a very attractive resort for rest and relaxation. Jeongseon preserves its various indigenous cultural assets.
Donggang River flowing right through Jeongseon subcounty is a popular spot for rafting. Jeongseon presents exquisite scenery surrounded by 22 famous mountain peaks above 1,000m. This area is the origin of the Han River.
Jeongseon is also the birthplace of most widely-known folk song `Arirang`, which is representing Korean's emotions well.
Jeongseon¡¯s vast mineral resources; 267 million tons of coal (36% of the nation's total), 100 million tons of iron (57% of total), and 10 billion tons of limestone (27% of total) are used to make a remarkable contribution to the national economic development.
However, while natural gas and petroleum as a substitute for coal is widely used, the demand for the coal is drastically decreasing; thus Jeongseon lost its competitiveness as a center of Korea¡¯s mining industry. Government forced the coal mine to close as part of the national rationalization policy of the coal industry.
With the enactment of "the Special Law to Support the Development of Closed Mining Areas" in 2000, the government built casino and resort, the Gangwonland, Korea¡¯s sole gambling floor open to public. Jeongseon is rejuvenating its vitality from the devastated former mining town, and becoming a plateau tourist area in Korea.
Utilizing superb conditions, Jeongseon has three primary objectives. First, a year-round resort area that preserves clean water and air, second, a perfect place to pursue leisure sports and the third, home to Korea's only casino open to natives and foreigners. Jeonseon makes a strenuous effort to become a leader in a tourism industry on the highlands in the 21st century. |
